How older adults relate to social media
|
Social media use has grown across all age groups, even older users, who have been switching to social networking to help manage their daily lives. Although users ages 18-29 continue to rely the most on social networking sites, surveys conducted in 2009 show that over half of internet users ages 50-64 now use these sites as well. Older users continue to rely heavily on email as an essential communication tool, but social media sites have slowly been attracting many repeat visitors. Recent studies show that more than half of the American mobile phone owners don’t know when their current mobile phone contract expires, leaving many consumers in the dark about upgrades and new plan options available. The study also revealed information on consumers’ knowledge and shopping habits around mobile technology. VoIP calls from Gmail top one million in one day
|
Google’s newly introduced VoIP calling system through Gmail allows users to make free calls to the US and Canada for at least the rest of the year. Google, who is rolling out the service in phases, promises to add international calls at a low price in the near future. One million people have tested the service so far, and it is questionable whether or not they will continue to use it. If Google can take it to the next step by integrating the service into the Android operating system, it could be in competition with Skype. Ridley Scott’s ‘Life in a Day’ launched on YouTube

‘Life in a Day,’ directed by Kevin Macdonald and produced by Ridley Scott is a documentary that asked the world’s online community to capture a moment of their lives on Saturday, July 24. The clips will be assembled to create a documentary of life on the planet for that day and can now be found on YouTube. The project will rely on the community’s feedback to determine which 20 of the 80,000 submitted clips will be selected for the final documentary to premiere in January. Online coupons able to track a lot of information about user
|
Coupons printed from the internet or sent to mobile phones are loaded with information about the customer, including identification about the customer, Facebook page information, Internet addresses, and even search terms used to find the coupon online. Internet generated coupon redemption has increased 263 percent to about 50 million coupons in 2009. Using online coupons also allows retailers to get around Google hurdles so that advertisers cannot only see reports on which keywords are working well as a whole, but also how each person is responding to each slogan. Retailers can use RevTrax to identify shoppers when they are signed into a coupon site, and when a customer becomes joins a fan club; the user’s Facebook ID becomes visible to the merchandiser. Online Trust Alliance group finds only 8 percent of sites ‘trustworthy’
|
Only 8 percent of Web sites are working to decrease online fraud. Online Trust Alliance Group issued an honor roll of companies that are free of malware and free of links to sites that contain malware. The 500 top Internet retail sites had the highest percentage on the honor role with 14 percent, and Federal government sites had the most malware, with only 3 percent on the honor role. Study shows men with iPhones appeal more to women
|
54 percent of women said that they would be more likely to date a man if he owns an iPhone because it shows that the man is intelligent and wealthy. 37 percent said that owning an iPhone makes a man also seem reliable, increasing the chance of a second date. UK sales of the iPhone are estimated to be around two million, with 75 percent of that attributed to sales to 18 to 40 year-old men. Impressions are also not always true in the dating game because men who own the iPhone normally have £3,750 less disposable income per annum than those who do not own the iPhone. Additional features on social networking phones are a must

79 percent of mobile phone and PC users in EMEA said that they would use social networking sites on both platforms. 90 percent of those between the ages of 16 and 25 access social networking sites, of this, 31 percent do so via both mobile phones and PCs. Users expect all of the features of social networking sites to be available on their mobile devices.
